CoSTOC 9/12/11 - Ride the Big Horns again

Final day of the CoSTOC Trip is a quick run from Basin to Billings, except for Breakfast at Dirty Annies and an extended stop for the construction on US 14 on the Dayton side. They are repaving the entire east side... it really needed it as the tar snakes prevent any kind of spirited ride.

I didn't make it home... ended up in Basin, WY at the Lilac Motel again. $39 with a rock solid WiFi... I was able to upload the photos

CoSTOC 9/10/11 SAT
Sat, Sep 10, 2011
Activity Type: Motorcycling | Event Type: Touring

Tim and Mark were kind enough to allow me to "camp" in their room. We rode some back roads together to Deckers and my old stomping ground roads near Evergreen. Even went by Echo lake and the old cabin. I got a little nostalgic wishing I could have been riding my bicycle with all the bicycles in Deer Creek Canyon. I was pretty lonely back in the day. We also went to Echo lake and came back through Evergreen and rode the back way through Stanley Park and North Turkey Creek.

Summary- Billings to Casper via US14 west over the Big Horns and US16 east over the Big Horns again... Granite Pass and Ten Sleep Pass. US 14 on the Dayton side is milled and undergoing repaving... the delay was not bad. Stopped in Burgess to see if the guys had arrived. They had not. I was thinking they were riding up from Greybull and I'd run into them as I was riding down to Greybull. . Turned out they rode up from Lovell and had lunch in Burgess as I was having lunch at Dirty Annies down in Shell just 25 miles away. I did not see them until Manitou as they stayed in Lander just west of Casper about 110 miles. I rode on intending to make Laramie but ended up in Casper. I had to call the cops during the night as there was a disturbance at the Motel 6. Casper is a hole. It isn't the first time I had trouble in a motel there (Ramada) I'll not ever stop in Sheridan or Casper again.

BearSTOC Bust / it's done (for a while)

We have some of the best motorcycle roads in the USA near my house. It was for this reason that the original idea for BearSTOC was spawned. The feeling (from the guy that thought of having a STOC event in this area was that WeSTOC was getting to big and kinda elitist. BearSTOC has run it's course and I will not be hosting the event for a while. At some point I'll hold an upscale version at the Rock Creek Resort in Red Lodge. Maybe in 2013

Today I rode the Beartooth Pass for the first time. I'll be posting other local rides here as well.

WeSTOC Nelson

This WeSTOC was 1 day up and and day there and 2 days back home. I'll be less hasty next year after retirement. I was lucky to get to go at all but I begged the supt. and he relented. Good to feel indespensable. After very little planning an some hasty packing I set the alarm for 5am this morning. I'm not a morning person. Usually I ride 9am-9pm. I was on the road (MT3) and left the house at 6:08am. I looked hastily at the website about border crossings and had it in my head that the border crossing at Porthill closed at 4pm (3pm my time) That meant I needed to really fly or face the prospect of backtracking to get across the border. Ricks bike turned over 10000 klics on this trip.

At the junction just slightly north of Bonners ferry my fear was relieved to find out the border was open 'til 11pm. I was running tardy and needed to make the Billings to Nelson trip in one day. The RR wanted me to make one more trip before I could leave. As chance would have it, Will and the rest of the Kansas contingent had passed my coal train as we were coming into Helena.

I called Chuck and met them all at their hotel and we all went over to my favorite cafe. Shellies Country Cafe.

Anyway the ride to Nelson went extremely well. I made it across the border without doing anymore than showing I had my passport. The border guard never even took it from my hand. Little did I know I had caught Will and the guys and they were waiting for me in the staging area just beyond the check point. We rode on to Nelson together and I saw no rain until the Welcome to Nelson... then it was like a wall of water.

Not looking good for me

Sorry guys... I've been informed that US14 is closed you will have to use 14a
Also the road from Belfry to Bridger is tore up
I did ride Belfry to Red Lodge via Bearcreek... it is fine

It's not looking like I'll make BearSTOC... as you can see I'm busy at work... photo in Bozeman by railfan

I been Railroaded! Please let the guys know I will not be there. Will and a few are staying in Burgess Jct.

I will have to work tomorrow (17th), and return 18th... if I get back soon enough I'll ride from Billings and see you all at the Pizza place and spend the night at KOA... it's possible I will not get back until Sunday early am

I'll take my
on the next train trip

Sorry guys, the flooding on the RR have made us all "step up for the good of the country"

BearSTOC 2011

Beware heavy snow and temp in the 20's on Beartooth pass 6/14/11... Photo by Michael Martin one of the few attendees and the olny one to make it over the pass before it closed again.
Event page

Warning.... this is not an organized ride in any sense. You are on your own for route, ride, fun, lodging all of it. We have had great feedback for the disorganized nature of this ride.

BearSTOC will be Burgess Jct - Red Lodge

Bring your camping gear for Red Lodge KOA - make your own reservations. We have a location at the campground set aside right behind the brilding next to the creek

Fri 17 June
You should arrive somewhere near in the Burgess Jct. area (Bear Lodge is unavailable) either the evening of the 17 or early morning the 18th. You will likely run into other riders in the area. Suggest staying in Greybull or Ranchester or Dayton (there is a Foothills campground and a biker bar there). Buffalo and Sheridan are more expensive
You are on your own for securing accommodations

Schedule of events:
Sat 18 June

1. Breakfast at
Dirty Annies. Tradition dictates breakfast at Dirty Annies at the bottom of Shell Canyon west of Shell and east of Greybull, WY. (see link)

After breakfast ride up Shell Canyon (see video below on the rides post)

2. 1000am - Riders meeting at the billboard map just west of Bear Lodge on US14A. We will discuss route options and safety. There is no cell service a Burgess Jct.

We will meet and splinter off into groups and ride one of the preplanned rides...

3. Pizza or burger at the Pizza Place 7 pm in Red Lodge

4. KOA Red Lodge -
I have reserved 2 Tent SPOTS for 4 riders, there are more available, make you own reservation, just let 'em know you are with the ST group - the owner is an ST rider. See photo, same place

there is also the Comfort Inn and other motels in the area
Google it.... you are on your own... this is not an organised ride in any sense.

Please RSVP to STOwners.com
